I read this book for a book club and was not disappointed. Anything family is my thing and so we find ourselves reading about three sisters, Sylvia, Helen and Jeanne. After the passing of Jeanne, the whole dynamics of the family changes when Sylvia and Helen get into a misunderstanding over apple cake....right, apple cake. And family, meaning children and grandchildren while not wanting to get involved in the tiff, are really involved via absence of what should be love between sisters.
They each do their own thing but Helen is always in the background of events she didnt go to, births she didnt attend, recitals and bat mitzvahs, and each relative quietly missing her. The dynamics of a family spanning three generations.
